Very recently in one of the leadership workshops, the concept of active listening became more clearer to me than ever before. We were given a few pictorial placards and were asked to explain our cards to the other person. The other person was also supposed to do the same. While we were hearing what the other person was saying, we were more focused on what we had understood by the pictures in our hands. This went on to 3-4 rounds by exchanging our cards with each other and when the timer ended we were all in our minds contemplating what we had explained to the other person about our thoughts over the pictures.
While we were pondering over our pictures and engrossed in our thoughts, we were now asked to explain what we had heard and not what we had thought about our placards. This shifted the dimensions and completely turned the tables. Now we were trying to forget what we had thought and trying to recall what we had heard.
This is what active listening is. When we are having a conversation, we are more bothered about listening to respond and not understanding. We are contemplating our thoughts rather than the thoughts getting conveyed by others to us.
This was such a simple exercise till we had a notion of having our thoughts on the pictures seen but it became difficult when we were asked to explain what we had heard and understood.
